Data mining is the newest and the most intriguing tool to take its place in the constellation of business intelligence tools used for examining the contents of a data warehouse. It helps organisations to make more informed business decisions and take consequent actions which are likely to lead to better business outcomes. Data mining itself is only part of the far larger process of understanding and responding to customer needs. In other words, data mining can only be profitable in a business environment if applied in the context of solving a business problem. In the broadest sense therefore, data mining can be thought of as a tool for promoting quality in the organisation, by playing a key role in understanding customer needs, hence enhancing customer satisfaction.
