In our view database archiving has been under-utilised for years. We think that that is now changing and we believe that this process will accelerate, thanks to Hadoop and the cloud. All the leading vendors in the market now offer cloud-based archiving and they all offer Hadoop. Both of these represent general-purpose solutions. It may make sense, if you have an Oracle database to archive onto another instance of Oracle using tiered storage but not many companies have a homogeneous database environment. Wouldn’t it make more sense to archive Oracle and SQL Server and DB2 and anything else all onto Hadoop or into the cloud (or both)? We expect Hadoop to become the platform of choice for on-premise database archival and cloud otherwise, and it will be those companies that offer solutions that support these options that will be most successful.
