Data is the lifeblood of organisations. It gives competitive advantage in terms of intellectual property and other trade secrets. Organisations hold reams of information related to customers and their own personnel. Much of this data is sensitive or confidential. There is much to be lost should data and information fall into the wrong hands, whether inadvertently or with malicious intent. As volumes of information continue to spiral, data security is becoming an ever increasing concern and all organisations need to strive to improve their efforts to ensure that all sensitive data is stored and communicated securely. At the same time, the number of systems on which data is stored and devices via which it is communicated is expanding rapidly, adding to concerns over data security.

This report is based on a survey of 200 organisations in the UK and the US, all of which have more than 1,000 employees. Respondents answered an in- depth questionnaire over the phone during October and November 2014 regarding data security in their organisations. The respondents were split across the financial services, manufacturing and commercial sectors, with the latter group comprising retailers, wholesalers and other commercial services.
