The turmoil in the financial markets that lead to the current economic down turn has had some interesting side effects that are impacting midsized businesses throughout Europe. As the brakes have come on IT budgets, and as a consequence IT security projects, computer criminals have upped their activities looking for new companies to exploit by stealing their data, intellectual property and, given the opportunity, their money.

This decrease in security budgets coupled with an increase in threats is what has been dubbed the "security paradox".

This paper will examine the practical steps that should enable midsized businesses to deal with the security paradox and develop a more robust security culture by addressing the problem little and often.
