From Bloor Research’s viewpoint the column-based approach advocated by Sybase will provide substantially better performance at lower cost than traditional approaches for analytical, reporting and data warehousing environments. Furthermore, it provides considerably more flexibility than can be provided by appliance vendors. We therefore see no obstacles to its continued success. We have previously advocated that the product should be targeted more widely and we are pleased to see that the company is addressing new sub-sectors within the market, though we believe (and even more so with the new performance boost and other features of this release) that Sybase IQ should be simply aimed at the entire general-purpose data warehousing market. Certainly it has particular strengths in particular areas but its overall capabilities allow it to compete across the board.
