HP and Oracle have recently announced the HP Oracle Database Machine. This has been positioned by Oracle as a competitor to Netezza and in this paper we examine the extent to which this is true and, if it is, where and when it might make sense to use the HP Oracle Database Machine. Conversely, we will also consider when it would be appropriate to invest in a Netezza-based solution.

More specifically, Oracle has been losing data warehousing business to Netezza (and others) over the last few years and the big question is the extent to which the introduction of the HP Oracle Database Machine will halt this hemorrhaging in its data warehousing market.

We assume in this paper that the reader is familiar with Oracle database technology (10g, 11g et al) as we will not be discussing this in any detail. We do not make that assumption with respect to Netezza but, nevertheless, we will not go into a deep consideration of the Netezza architecture.
