Richard's business experience is rooted in his twenty-seven years in international industry management with the former global chemical major ICI plc, latterly (1993-1999) as its global Group VP IT. He has, since 1993, built deep experience and insight into the workings of the ITO/BPO markets through his ICI role, and as Chairman (1999-2004) of the outsourcing consultants Morgan Chambers plc (now, via its acquisition by Equaterra Inc, part of KPMG).
He works as a strategic advisor, coach and facilitator, articulating the powerful & competitive forces that are reshaping the business models of the IT Services vendor community. His particular focus is the transformation of classic outsourcing business models by new models based on direct sourcing of information technology & business process services, including through the agency of 'the Cloud'. Alongside his work with Bloor Research, Richard is an Associate of the Leading Edge Forum (a senior CIO membership club), chairs the TMMi Foundation (dedicated to raising the qulaity & effectivness of the testing process) and has recently completed a three year term (2008-2011) as an elected member of the main board of Intellect (the UK trade association for the IT, Telecoms and Electronics industries) having chaired Intellect's Outsourcing & Offshore Group between 2005 and 2009. He advised the UK Government's 'G-Cloud & Apps Store' initiative 2009-2010. Richard is thus very well placed to assist both corporate & government clients and IT Services vendor clients in building sustainable and profitable business services & technology sourcing models.
Richard studied at Cambridge (MA) and Yale (PhD) and in his ICI years from 1973 worked in a variety of international commercial & business roles. Since he left ICI in 1999, in addition to his other roles, he has worked building his experience as a non-executive Chairman & Director of the boards of small and young ventures in both the IT industry and in the arts world. He is a published author ['Global Services - Moving to a Level Playing Field, co-authored with Mark Kobayashi-Hillary and published by the BCS in 2007] and writes a monthly column in the UK edition of CIO Magazine.
