Tel first programmed a computer in 1963 and rapidly became hooked. After graduating with a degree in Mathematics he went on to get a Masters degree in Computer Science in 1972 and has worked as a programmer ever since.

Over a long career he has worked for a number of companies handling a variety applications. He worked with Digico when it was the second largest computer manufacturer in the UK and was part of the team that maintained the operating system. His time with Instrumental Colour Systems stretched his mathematical abilities as he worked with some of the leading colour experts to measure and predict colours. Subsequently, he worked for the Dowty group in a number of roles
